Contemplations on life

Spotlight on Gbenga Offo

Sometimes a piece of art can capture a mood or a head- or heart-space in a way that words cannot. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, I acquired this piece, Ruminations by Gbenga Offo, from Bloom Art Gallery in Lagos, Nigeria. At the time, it really reflected my mood; it was a time that got all of us thinking about the nature of existence. Hopefully, we’ll continue to take a more philosophical approach to life and what it is to be human.

Born in 1957, Gbenga Offo is one of Nigeria’s leading contemporary artists. Before becoming a full-time fine artist in 1996, he was an illustrator at prominent advertising agencies. Offo has exhibited his work in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States. His works are part of many leading corporate and public collections.

Offo’s style is a unique combination of expressionist, Cubist and traditional African influences. He grew up in the 1970s, a time when artists were pushing the boundaries, and art in its many forms was a movement. Read more about Offo’s influences at Artland.com.
